 Pygmy Hog

Critically endangered — IUCN
world’s smallest wild pig
indicators of the management status of grassland habitats. The grasslands where the pygmy hog resides are crucial for the survival of other endangered species such as Indian Rhinoceros, Swamp Deer, Wild Buffalo , Hispid Hare, Bengal Florican
In 1996, a captive-breeding programme of the species was initiated in Assam, and some hogs were reintroduced in Sonai Rupai area in 2009

Habitat
Relatively undisturbed, tall ‘terai’ grasslands

Distribution
Formerly, the species was more widely distributed along the southern Himalayan foothills but now is restricted to only a single remnant population in Manas Wildlife Sanctuary and its buffer reserves

Threats
loss and degradation of grasslands
dry-season burning
livestock grazing
afforestation of grasslands
Hunting
flood control schemes – as it disturbs the natural successions and the replacements of former grasslands by later stage communities

Pygmy hog-sucking Louse, a parasite that feeds only on Pygmy Hogs will also fall in the same risk category of critically endangered as its survival is linked to that of the host species.

GAMOCHA

It is one of the most easily recognizable cultural symbols of
the Assamese people.
• The Gamocha, a white rectangular piece of cotton hand woven
cloth with primarily a red border on three sides and red woven
motifs on the fourth (in addition to red, other colors are also used)
is put to many uses.
• It is also hung around the neck at the prayer hall and thrown over
the shoulder to signify social status or respect.
• Gamochas, also known as bihuwaans, are offered during Bihu as a
token of love.
• Significantly the gamocha is used equally by all, irrespective of
religious and ethnic backgrounds (see image below).

Bhor Tal Nritya

• It is an extension of Sankari culture. Six to ten dancers equipped
with cyrnbols perform this dance to the first bit of '7hiya Nom" and
produces a good number of attractive formations displaying the
symbols.
• The dance can be seen during festive occasions in and around
Barpeta and Guwahati.

 Ahom people

They migrated to Brahmaputra valley from Myanmar and not Bhutan. Mughals attacked them in 1662 under the leadership of Mir Jumla and defeated them but Mughals control didn’t last for long. Sukaphaa and his followers established the Ahom kingdom (1228–1826) and the Ahom dynasty ruled and expanded the kingdom until the British gained control of the region through the Treaty of Yandabo upon winning the First Anglo-Burmese War in 1826
